Like any muscle, the heart needs a constant supply of oxygen and nutrients that are carried to it by the blood in the coronary arteries. When the coronary arteries become narrowed or clogged and cannot supply enough blood to the heart, the result is coronary heart disease. The pain that is felt as a result of inadequate oxygen-carrying blood is called angina. This pain is usually felt in the chest and/or left arm and shoulder. However, sometimes there are no symptoms.

Coronary heart disease is caused by a build up of fat and cholesterol in the blood that causes the blood to become abnormally thick (viscous).
